New and Enhanced Features in WordPress 6.8

It is time once again to look at the news exciting the WordPress community — the first major event of this calendar year: the new version 6.8 of the WordPress core. The new version has been available since 15 April 2025 and carries the name "Cecil", inspired by Cecil Taylor — a pioneer of free jazz, poet and pianist.

Everyone is asking what the development team has to offer, and the answer points in one direction: faster sites, more secure and much easier to manage. While previous releases focused on improving existing tools, version 6.8 bets on optimisation of already-created functionality as well as some interesting and innovative solutions. Here is a look at all the exciting new features in WordPress 6.8:

  • Faster loading times via the Speculative Loading feature;
  • High-level security through bcrypt and BLAKE2b encryption;
  • Improved design tools;
  • Different styles for classic themes;
  • More control in the Query Loop block;
  • Improved display of features and info;
  • New API functions and backend options for developers.

1. Faster Loading Times via Speculative Loading

We begin with the most interesting integration, which is expected to speed up sites and their loading. What exactly does "Speculative Loading" mean and how does it work?

This option "predicts" what the user's next action will be and starts loading content in the background — without waiting for that action to actually happen. Here is an example: you have a blog post that ends with a link. While you are reading the page, Speculative Loading determines that your most likely next action is to click on the link. The system therefore starts loading the content and elements behind the link in the background, so when you click on it the page appears almost instantly. This will be very noticeable on sites with heavy content that takes a long time to render.

This feature works in "conservative" mode by default to avoid consuming resources and causing unforeseen conflicts with other plugins. For developers, the API offers options for fine-tuning — for example, defining the moment when pre-loading should begin. If the user hovers the mouse over a link, a rule can be set to start the pre-loading process only at that point, avoiding constant background activity while also not waiting for the user to click before loading begins. Developers can now control the entire functionality with the wp_speculation_rules_configuration filter.

2. High-Level Security via bcrypt and BLAKE2b Encryption

WordPress 6.8 aims to dramatically improve password security by transitioning the encryption algorithm from phpass portable hashing to bcrypt. This change makes passwords significantly harder to decrypt and provides better protection against modern hacking techniques.

An additional security measure involves the use of BLAKE2b hashing for application passwords and auth cookies, combining high speed with strong cryptographic guarantees. These changes affect all stored password hashes and are applied automatically — users do not need to take any action for their accounts to benefit from the improved security.

3. Improved Design Tools

3.1. Global Styles Panel in the Site Editor

The Global Styles panel in the Site Editor now has a cleaner layout with better-organised sections for typography, colours, spacing and layout settings, making it easier to manage the overall look of a block theme.

3.2. Style Selector in the Toolbar

A new section for selecting styles in the toolbar menu allows users to quickly switch between style variations of their theme without having to navigate to Global Styles every time.

3.3. New Block in the Editor — "Query Total"

The new Query Total block displays the total number of results in a query — useful for archives, search results pages and filtered lists.

4. Different Styles for Classic Themes

Classic themes can now opt in to theme.json support, giving them access to Global Styles and block style variations previously only available to block themes. This bridges the gap between classic and block themes.

5. More Control in the Query Loop Block

WordPress 6.8 adds new query controls including the ability to filter by author, and improvements to how sticky posts are handled within the Query Loop block. These additions give site builders greater flexibility when displaying custom content feeds.

6. Improved Display of Features and Info

The Details panel has been reorganised and now more clearly displays post metadata, template information and connection to patterns. Navigation between sections is more intuitive and less cluttered.

7. New API Functions and Backend Options for Developers

WordPress 6.8 brings several new APIs and backend improvements including font face APIs for loading fonts within themes, improvements to the interactivity API, and more granular hooks for controlling block rendering — all aimed at giving developers greater power and precision.

Conclusion

WordPress 6.8 "Cecil" is a well-rounded release that improves performance, security and the content editing experience. Whether you are a site owner benefiting from faster loading and better security, a designer working with the improved style tools, or a developer taking advantage of new APIs — version 6.8 has something meaningful to offer.
